1971 VW Bay Window Campmobile

This has been my pandemic project! I’m a huge VW bus fan and always wanted one of my own. It runs great (odometer says 55,768 miles- probably more like 155,768) definitely needs some body work and a paint job. Undercarriage and body have average rust in typical places, but pretty reasonable for a 50 year old vehicle.

What’s been done:

On the inside— New upholstery and cushions, curtains floor, headliner, side panels, front low-back bucket seats, upper cot. Sink is hooked up to a foot pump with clean and grey water tanks and works great, as well as the two-burner propane stove. Lock box installed under the fold out “z” bed for extra security for valuables. New locks on doors installed. Mostly original furniture is repaired, cleaned up, and still in place.

On top— Newly refinished gel coat pop top and luggage rack with new bellows/canvas.

On the motor— Received tune up and serviced in December of 2020. Distribution cap was replaced and compression is good. Carburetors were removed, disassembled, cleaned, adjusted, and synced. Fuel mixture jets and fuel filter replaced.

What needs fixing/attention— Gas gauge/sensor currently doesn’t work. Heater is constantly on, and heater/cool air levers aren’t hooked up (although I have them and will include them with the bus). Door and window seals need to be replaced. Some dash controls and dash in general need some attention. I’ve only found a handful of rust spots (see photos) that have broken through the metal – the rest is just surface rust spots.
