Time has come to sell my Bus. It is the desirable Westphalia Deluxe camper. There were a lot of companies doing camper conversions in the 70s, this is the only one that was built in Germany and sold by Volkswagen. It’s also the Deluxe version, this gets you the propane stove (works), refrigerator (didn’t work well when new, converted to an icebox) and table between the front seats.

I bought it from the original owner 10 years ago, he worked at Berkeley (still had UC parking stickers from the early 80’s) and polished up what was a very original bus. I’ve driven it from Mexico to Canada with out any major problems. The engine was rebuilt 13k ago by a top Bay Area builder. Unfortunately rebuilt heads were used and valve seat has started to sink. I stopped driving it and put it into storage 3 years ago. It’s on a Non Op with the DMV.

This Bus has the correct 2.0 Type IV motor with all the needed smog components. I see a lot of post 1975 buses on CL with bug motors, they’ll never pass smog.

Pros:
Very clean original Westy owned by someone that put attention into it that no “car flipper” would. For example, the driving lights on the bumper are Hella 500s. In the late 90’s Hella moved production form Germany to Mexico, I searched 2 years to find NOS (new old stock) German ones. Another example, the Westy’s that came with a refrigerator had a duel battery setup and uprated alternator that had a cooling fan on the pulley. When alternators were turned in for rebuild they never came back with the right pulley. Took me 3 years to find it. The list of these sorts of things goes on and on.

Cons:
39 year old paint with flaws and blemishes. This never bothered me as I used the bus, it’s not a trailer queen. I stripped the front panel and had some windshield sill rust sorted (very common) but that paint has started to fade.

About the photos, they are a few years old. The Bus has been in storage for a 3 years, it needs a good cleaning.

I’d like to find a good 3rd steward to keep it local.

It’s a great California car.

Offers considered.
